According to the National Science Foundation, an average person can have up to 60,000 thoughts every day.
95% of these thoughts are the same as yesterday.
80% of these thoughts are negative.
Wild right? We have this incredible brain that we put to use every day and we are only using about 5% of it on average to carve out new ways of thinking. New ideas for a project. New ways to implement a strategic marketing plan. Or innovate for a new client.
How do we build new pathways to increase this % and build a brain that helps us have more creative thoughts?
Break the routine!
'Having a routine is slowly killing our creativity.' - John Assaraf
Studies have shown that enriching your life by something as simple as committing to going to a workshop, even once a month, can create new neural pathways that will in turn improve performance, enhance creativity, focus and memory.
Many of us feel 'stuck in a loop', unsure how to break out of it. By challenging yourself, this will give the brain new opportunities to think, create and believe outside of the same walls we live in every day.
There is the famous phrase, 'jack of all trades, master of none', which has many negative connotations surrounding it. It tends to invoke the idea that said 'jack' lacks any specialist skills and really just dips his toe in anything he can get his hands on. When actually, the full phrase is “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” It was a compliment.
Learning new things that seemingly have nothing to do with your current expertise is an incredible way to expand the brain. Leading the life of a chameleon, fitting into multiple boxes, contributing to various industries, all the while learning about yourself and what you really love to do.
Two years ago I wrote down something I was going to commit to once a week, once a month, once a quarter and once a year for my personal and professional development. This hasn't only expanded my mind into new ways of thinking, but has also allowed me to build a business where I help busy working professionals find optimal health by integrating the power of mindfulness.
When was the last time you committed to learning something new?
